Rabbi Irvin D. Ungar—Scholar-in-Residence Weekend

Friday Night:
Presentation: Justice Illuminated: The Art of Arthur Szyk

Slide oriented presentation on the art and messages of the Polish-Jewish artist Arthur Szyk (pronounced "Shik"). Szyk was the leading political artist in America during WWII, fighting the Nazis through his art. His illuminated Haggadah has been called one of the greatest illustrated books of all times. Our guest speaker has curated museum exhibitions of Szyk's art for the Library of Congress, and served as consultant for a Szyk exhibit at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum as well as authored a book on Szyk. He is the Curator of The Arthur Szyk Society and has delivered talks about the artist at the Library of Congress, Hebrew University in Jerusalem, at Jewish institutions in Krakow and Warsaw, and on US college campuses and synagogues.

Saturday Night:
Presentation: Judaica Road Show

Have you ever wondered what your grandfather's Prayerbook was worth, or how to preserve your grandmother's family Bible? Based on the popular TV show, Antique Road Show, Judaica expert, Irvin Ungar will comment on the history and value of books, artifacts, objects, and memorabilia which are brought to the program by members of the congregation and community. A highly educational and entertaining evening will unfold. Planning will be needed in advance and coordinated with a synagogue representative.

Sunday Morning:
Presentation: Historic Judaica: Rare Books, Manuscripts & Works of Art

Rare books and manuscripts are usually hidden behind lock and key, and only occasionally do we have an opportunity to glimpse the treasures of our people, let alone have them explained in a lively and animated fashion. And what about the value of Judaica as collectibles: the most famous illustrated Passover Haggadah, a letter signed by Einstein on Jewish survival during the Holocaust, 19th century photographs of Jerusalem, the first Hebrew Bible printed in America, or a newspaper proclaiming the creation of the State of Israel. Our guest speaker will exhibit and explain the world of rare books and manuscripts that one normally only sees in museums or in Special Library collections. Older students of the Sunday school and their parents might be encouraged to attend as well.

All of the programs will include visual images and artifacts, and will allow for group interaction and questions.

Additional Option (Saturday Morning)
With the permission of the Rabbi of the host synagogue, Rabbi Ungar would be delighted to prepare a Dvar Torah for the Saturday morning Shabbat service which would tie together a theme of the Torah portion with the world of historic Judaica. (Approximately 10 minutes)

Another Option (Saturday Afternoon)
Rabbi Ungar would be pleased to deliver a more intimate presentation in a home or private setting for a select group of synagogue members, board members, sponsors, or honorees as part of the weekend.

COST: $3500 plus airfare, 2-3 nights hotel lodging, plus meal and transportation expenses
