This is the first haggadah printed in Venice (the first edition of Zevach Pesach was printed in 1505 in Constantinople) and is the earliest obtainable haggadah printed in Italy. Only a single known copy of the Soncino Sidorello Haggadah precedes it. Hebrew printing began in Venice with the arrival of Daniel Bomberg who set up the first Hebrew press in 1511. Giustiniani (the printer of our haggadah), whose press was established in 1545, lasted only seven years. Of particular significance is the appearance of this haggadah during the earliest years of the establishment of the Venice ghetto, the flourishing of the Renaissance, and the censoring of Hebrew books.

Woloch of New York for their personal collection, it was later decided to publish this Haggadah for the benefit of the International Society for Yad Vashem in Israel. The powerfully, symbolic images used by American artist David Wander, employ the horrors of The Holocaust as a metaphor for that other tale of slavery and torture--- The Exodus from Egypt. As a further means of conveying the feelings of isolation and fear, Wander has chosen not to portray a single human face or figure... this as a tribute to the memory of those no longer with us. The calligraphy and micrography are by Yonah Weinreb, a Torah scribe, scholar and accomplished artist. The portfolio consists of 11 full page original prints signed and numbered by the artist, 31 illuminated pages and 13 black and white pages.

American Matzoh!
American Heritage Haggadah. Compiled and Edited by David Geffen. Jerusalem: Gefen Publishing House, 1992. 100pp. Folio. Illustrated. Stiff boards with slipcase. Near Fine Condition.
$ 265
FIRST DELUXE EDITION limited to 110 copies. In his introduction David Geffen writes of the unique place that American Judaism holds in the world. In the seders of his youth he tells of his Bubbie singing The Star Spangled Banner immediately following Had Gadya. For a family that had lost multiple members in The Holocaust, America was seen as a place of Redemption–:a proper metaphor for the story of Egyptian flight from bondage. The American Heritage Haggadah is a brilliant gathering of the Passover tradition for Americans. Presented from an historical, social, as well as religious viewpoint; the American Seder is shown in all of its traditional charm, portraying both humor and sorrow. Clippings of adverts for Kosher foods are included along with reproductions of early American haggadot, photos of historical gatherings, letters from heads of state, even a thank you letter acknowledging a soldier's seder during Operation Desert Storm! This book justly honors the Jew's season of Hope in the country that continues that inspiration.

The MAGNIFICENT Szyk Haggadah, One of 250 copies printed on Vellum -
The Passover narrative as Zionist allegory
"A book worthy to be placed among the most beautiful
of books that the hand of man has produced"
– London Times

LIMITED EDITION, ONE OF 250 COPIES PRINTED ON VELLUM, SIGNED BY ARTHUR SZYK AND CECIL ROTH. There could be no more a fitting subject for the milestone collaborative work of the internationally acclaimed Polish Jew, Arthur Szyk, and the eminent British scholar and historian, Dr. Cecil Roth than the Passover Haggadah. Through Szyk's efforts, as the greatest 20th century illuminator working in the style of the 16th century miniaturist painters, this Haggadah represents the culmination of the great illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages and of Haggadah illumination particularly, where every individually illuminated text is in itself a work of extraordinary artistic accomplishment as well as a work of profound scholarship. Upon its publication, The Szyk Haggadah was described by the London Times as "a book worthy to be placed among the most beautiful of books that the hand of man has produced." It took the printer three years just to gather the fine materials for its war-time production in London.

Given the unfolding events in Nazi Europe, the Haggadah became for Szyk a personal and political statement. Dedicating his Exodus narrative to King George VI, Szyk acknowledged the key role that England, his temporary place of residence, had to play in Jewish survival. Yet the British Mandate on Palestine, symbolized by its White Paper and its restrictive immigration to Palestine weighed heavily on Szyk. On the dedication page of his Haggadah, he skillfully presents his work to the King: " At the feet of your most gracious majesty I humbly lay these works of my hands, shewing forth the affliction of my people Israel." Then Szyk followed with his self-portrait, brush and palette in hand, in standing position, leaning against his illumination. Behind him he has drawn huddled Jewish refugees, to their left a passenger ship, one of the "illegal" ships hopeful of breaking the British embargo to bring Jews into Palestine. The Hebrew word "Zion" is inscribed on British castle pillars nearby.

Of his accomplishment, Szyk has written: " I am but a Jew praying in art, and if I have worked, and if I have succeeded to some degree, if I have been favorably accepted among the elite of society, I owe it all to the teachings and the traditions, and the eternal virtues of my People." This is truly one of the most magnificent illuminated books of all times, and certainly the greatest illuminated haggadah in centuries.

The [Szyk] Haggadah. Executed by Arthur Szyk. Edited by Cecil Roth. Jerusalem and Tel Aviv: Massadah and Magen, [5716], 1956. Double-leaved pages with Hebrew and English text. Profusely illustrated. Blue velvet binding. Original 3/4 leather and blue cloth case. FIRST TRADE EDITION, and first edition printed on paper.
