Historicana is located 10 minutes from the San Francisco Airport. By appointment only. It is recommended that visitors to the Bay Area phone ahead before visiting our gallery which is located in a historic 1911 house in Burlingame, California.

HISTORICANA, established in 1987 by its Founder and CEO, Irvin Ungar, specializes in the buying and selling of rare books, manuscripts and historic works of art. Our specialized areas of interest focus on the field of historic Judaica and the artwork of Arthur Szyk (1894-1951).
In addition to our regularly issued catalogues, we have published theme-related catalogues in the areas of Zionism, American Judaica and Haggadot. Our Birth of a Nation catalogue commemorated the 50th anniversary of the creation of the State of Israel, while our Catalogue 25 highlighted American Judaica in recognition of "Celebrate 350," marking 350 years of Jews in America. We have also published a Collectors Haggadah Catalogue 1695 - Present.
Among the high spots we have sold are: an Anne Frank autograph inscription; a 1492 Ferdinand-Isabella signed document regarding the confiscation of Jewish property during the Expulsion from Spain; an 18th century illuminated Haggadah manuscript by Aron Wolf Herlingen; and the original paintings for Arthur Szyk's Haggadah.
Additionally we have sold books and autograph letters signed by Albert Einstein, Theodor Herzl and David Ben-Gurion. We have also handled autographs, letters, notes and signatures of Rebecca Gratz, Judah Touro, Mordecai Manuel Noah, Haym M. Salomon. Almost all important first American Hebrew books have passed through our hands including: the first Hebrew Bible printed in America, the first Haggadah, the first grammar of Judah Monis and the first translations of the Hebrew Bible into English by Isaac Lesser.
We are proud of our relationship with our private clients, whom we have assisted in collection development. In addition, we count numerous museums and university special collection libraries among our clientele. Irvin Ungar established HISTORICANA in 1987, after serving 13 years in the pulpit rabbinate. Now celebrating 20 years in the rare book and art world, Irvin has also curated museum exhibitions, appeared in several documentary films for both the wide screen and TV, authored a book about Arthur Szyk and published numerous articles. He has also lectured world-wide from Hebrew University in Jerusalem to the Library of Congress in Washington DC to the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw.

Irvin is frequently invited to serve as a guest speaker on a wide variety of subjects relating to Judaica or for scholar-in-residence weekends where he often sets up mini-exhibitions pertaining to his talks. For further information about Irvin's programs see Presentations.
Irvin lives in Burlingame, California, near San Francisco, with his wife, Margie. His two children are graduates of UCLA.
